About

WELCOME

Thatonepointofview.com, a travel photography and lifestyle blog, was dreamed up after a cross-Atlantic, cross-cultural move abroad to Germany. Founded in 2017 as an outlet for sharing my travels and expat experiences, thatonepointofview.com became a place to inspire others to feel comfortable traveling the world and experiencing new cultures through city guides, travel itineraries, and personal experiences.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to connect with the modern traveler, providing insights into exploring new cultures either through our experience living abroad in Germany or traveling Europe extensively through city guides and handcrafted itineraries. Always with an emphasis on photography locations and finding the best views.

MY STORY

Born and raised in the USA, my first international experience was a study abroad program in college to Barcelona, Spain. You can say after that moment I had discovered my travel bug. The summer after college, before entering the “real-world”, I took to Europe for a 4 month long backpacking trip with only a point and shoot camera and dreams to see more.

In 2017, after 5 years in the corporate world, my husband and I uncovered an opportunity to move abroad to Cologne, Germany. Knowing very basic German, and never before having visited Cologne, we packed only the essentials into four suitcases and moved our Golden Retriever across the Atlantic without an apartment or a clue what was to come. By this time I had invested in my first DSLR camera and lenses, and was ready to put them to use around the world. The rest is documented here, so follow along!

Some places you see on Instagram turn out not to meet expectations in real life. This is NOT one of those places.
If you want to stay and experience a beautiful sunrise, book with the only boutique hotel in the area, Samet Nangshe Boutique Hotel using the [Link in my Bio].
The view was breathtaking, the staff were beyond helpful and kind, and the free made to order breakfast was divine. I just kept walking around smiling, because I couldn’t believe this place was real. It’s a true 10/10 experience.

Ever wonder what people really are spending while Ever wonder what people really are spending while full time traveling? Here is a breakdown of our spending from the past month in Thailand and Laos:
Hotels: $2,800
Flights: $627
Transportation: $572
Activities: $1,120
Food: $2,390
Other: $480 (laundry services and SIM card)
= a grand total of $7,989 for two people or just under $4K per person. This comes out to $129 per person per day.
You absolutely CAN do this cheaper than us, but I wanted to give a realistic picture of what we are spending while being budget conscious, but not saying no to any experiences or meals 😅
Also full disclosure, this is our spending in Asia only, and does not include our expenses back in the US.

I was actually happy dancing in the boat 🛶 fina I was actually happy dancing in the boat 🛶 finally getting to see the lotus flower lake in Thailand with my own eyes. 🪷
We made a special trip to Udon Thani, Thailand just to see this lake where the lotus flowers grow. It actually looked like the tulip fields of the Netherlands on water.
Some practical tips in case you want to visit as well [save for future planning]:
🪷 Flowers are most prominent from the end of November through February
🪷 It’s best to get here BEFORE sunrise and watch the sun rise from the boat
🪷 If you don’t want to come for the sunrise, before noon is still best, as the lotus flowers close when it gets too hot
🪷 Tour boat driver knows all the good spots, and will help you with photos
🪷 Make sure to save some bahts for a tip!
🪷 There are small boats (without roofs) that accommodate 2 and large boats (with a canopy) accommodating up to 8
🪷 Small boats cost 150 baht per person and the large boats cost 500 baht total
🪷 It takes around 1 hour to get here from Udon Thani. Just tell your taxi/driver the “Red Lotus Lake”
This stop in Udon Thani worked perfectly into our itinerary when leaving Laos, and entering back into northern Thailand, on our way to Chiang Mai.
Have you added this spot to your bucket list yet?

From personal experience, staying at Shanghai Mansion in Bangkok’s Chinatown is one of the most efficient Bangkok experiences you can have in the city.
Not only is the Shanghai Mansion architecturally beautiful, just steps from the hotel is Bangkok’s most famous street food destination in Chinatown, with numerous Michelin star recommended food stalls to explore.
Beyond the food, the location is perfect to access Bangkok’s main train station for a trip to Ayutthaya, or the Bangkok Metro to see Wat Arun and the Grand Palace.
If you are looking for the perfect home base to cover the best things to do in Bangkok in a short amount of time look no further. Make sure to book with Expedia using the [link in my bio] to get the best deal!

How peaceful is this spot in Luang Prabang? The How peaceful is this spot in Luang Prabang?
The best part is it’s not just pretty, there is also a fun activity involved too. You can’t get here unless you book a cooking class and market tour with Tamarind Cooking School.
And the cooking class was 10/10 worth it! Check out my Laos highlights for some behind the scenes.
